Mendises destroy Zimbabwe

Jeevan and Ajantha Mendis together successfully thrashed Zimbabwe in the opener of the World Cup T20 to open Sri Lanka’s account. Jeevan hit a well paced 30-ball 43, while Ajantha took 6-8 in his four over spell, breaking the Worldwide T20 record, as well as his own record of 6-17. During the Zimbabwe innings, there was only one 20-plus score, which came from Hamilton Masakadza (20). Ajantha was unplayable, and ran through 4 overs, giving 8 runs, with 2 maidens, and 6 wickets. He was also ably assisted by Jeevan, who took 3/24 in his 4 overs. The two of them were so effective that none of their pace bowlers, including the devastating Lasith Malinga, had to bowl 4 overs before Zimbabwe was bowled out for 100. Sri Lanka’s convincing total of 182 was built up by Jeevan, Kumar Sangakkara (44 of 26) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (39 of 28). With only these three players crossing 20, one might wonder how Sri Lanka got to 182. The answer to that is EXTRAS. Zimbabwe gave away 20 extras, which was 36% of the Sri Lankan total. Other than this the Sri Lankan batsmen was were particularly severe on Chris Mpofu, who was smashed for 49 in his 4 overs. Zimbabwe’s only success with the ball was in the form of Greame Cremer, who took out Dilshan and finished with respectable figures of 1/27 in his 4 overs. So Sri Lanka have gotten themselves an almost-assured into the Super 8s, while Zimbabwe will now face a 90-degree task as they have to defeat AB de Villiers’ in-form South African side in a do-or-die game. So hope you enjoyed that, and happy cricketing! 🙂
