CSK – A Pre-Auction Review

The Chennai Super Kings are unarguably the most successful team of the IPL. So far, they have never failed to qualify for the semifinals, and have made it to 4 of the 5 finals, and won 2 of them. However, it’s not just the prolific names that have got CSK so far, but their team balance. The patient Micheal Hussey and the dangerous Murali Vijay up front, followed by Suresh Raina, and the clinical Subramaniam Badrinath, after whom you have MS Dhoni, Albie Morkel, Dwayne Bravo, and Ravindra Jadeja. And their bowling, spearheaded by the accurate Ben Hilfenhaus and Morkel, with the miserly Ravichandran Ashwin and Shadab Jakati following. This is their side. And if you notice, it’s all perfectly balanced in almost every aspect. So what do they really need? I think all they really need to do is probably buy back Doug Bollinger, who was released, probably for the fact that he came at a price of $700,000. However, there have been some holes in that superb suit of armor that CSK have. For example, Ravindra Jadeja has been very mediocre, which is definitely not expected of any player, 2 million dollar or not. Also, Murali Vijay is very unpredictable, and hence unreliable. Still, there’s not much an auction can do there, because you can have only so many reserves. However, CSK’s biggest find was Faf du Plessis. He scored excellent runs for CSK in the first two-thirds of the IPL, but faltered, was unceremoniously dumped, and replaced with Micheal Hussey. So the only players I can say will be useful for CSK other than Bollinger are probably Johan Botha (spinning option, plus batting contribution), and maybe RP Singh, or Rangana Herath  in case the bowling fails.

Potential squad:

  • Dwayne Bravo
  • Albie Morkel

Notes:

  • If extra pacer is needed, RP Singh comes in for Jakati (if overseas, Bollinger comes in for Bravo)
